Dr Oz: Danger of Taking Too Much Calcium
Dr. Oz says Calcium is an essential mineral that we all need for good bone health, especially women, but too much Calcium can actually cause serious health problems according to recent studies. Dr. Tanya Edwards of the Cleveland Clinic explained that Calcium is responsible for many functions in the body, but women are being bombarded with recommendations to get more Calcium in their diet, which could be causing them more harm than good. She says if you have too much Calcium in your body it needs to find someplace to go, which may not always be your bones. It could end up in your tissue or arteries where it could build up over time and lead to cardiac arrest.
Dr Oz: Calcium Supplement vs Calcium in Foods
Dr. Tanya Edwards explained Calcium that is contained in the foods we eat is easy for the body to process and use, but Calcium in supplement form has to go through a series of steps, which can put an added strain on the body. Dr. Oz and Dr. Edwards shared Calcium-rich foods you can eat to get the recommended 1,000-1,200 milligrams every day.
- Plain Non-Fat Greek Yogurt: 8 ounces = 415 milligrams
- Collard Greens: 1 cup = 350 milligrams
- Canned Salmon: 3 ounces = 181 milligrams (Dr. Edwards recommends breaking down and eating the bones because that is where the Calcium is in Canned Salmon.)
- White Beans: 1/2 cup = 100 milligrams
Dr Oz: Calcium Supplement Recommendation
Dr. Oz says it is ideal to get your Calcium through the foods you eat, but he shared his supplement recommendation in case you feel you are not getting enough in your diet.
- No more than 600 milligrams of Calcium in supplement form
- 400 milligrams Magnesium
- 1,000 IU Vitamin D3
