Dr Oz: Secret Fat Sources

Dr Oz played a game called Hi or Lo: Secret Fat Sources to teach us how much saturated fat is in our food.  It is important to cut out unhealthy fat, but do you know which foods are the worst for you?  He gave two ladies from his audience 20 seconds to arrange sesame seeds, mashed potatoes, ground turkey and part-skim ricotta cheese in order from the lowest concentration of Saturated Fat to the highest concentration.

Dr Oz said that the following is the order of these foods from the lowest amount of saturated fat to the highest amount: Dr Oz Sesame Seeds

1.  Sesame Seeds have the lowest amount of saturated fat with only 5 grams per tablespoon, plus they help to reduce the cholesterol in your body.  The ladies got this right so they won a bag of brown sesame seeds.

2.  Mashed Potatoes have the second lowest amount of saturated fat, with 9 grams of fat per cup.  If you use skim milk, you can trim off some of the fat from the dish.  The ladies won a hand mixer, though I thought from the box it looked like a Cuisinart Immersion Blender actually.

3.  Ground Turkey has the second highest amount of saturated fat, with 12.5 grams of fat in 85% lean ground turkey.  Doctor Oz said that this is around the same amount as you find in lean ground beef.  The ladies got yet another one right so they won a new saute pan to cook their ground turkey.

4.  Part-Skim Ricotta Cheese has the most saturated fat, even though it sounds tricky because it is called “part-skin.”  Dr Oz said that there is 20 grams of fat in one cup, so you are better off choosing a skim mozzarella instead.  The prize for getting this one right was a new set of baking instruments!
