Dr Oz: 28 Day National Challenge: Soda & Soft Drinks

By on September 23, 2010

Doctor Oz’s first 28 day challenge of the season is to quit drinking soda and soft drinks, which I think is a great way to kick off the season!  Soda is making American’s sick and fat.  53 million Americans drink at least one soda a day, and we spent $70 Billion last year on soda.  Did you know that one 20 ounce soda has 17 tsp of sugar in it?  Soda drinkers consume an extra 91,000 calories a year which accounts for a weight gain of 26 pounds per year.  Soda also increases your risk for Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease and Osteoporosis.  Diet sodas are not good either, because they can make you crave sugar even more.  Are you convinced yet?  Everyone should join Dr Oz’s 28 Day National Challenge to quit drinking soda! Dr Oz 28 Days to Quit Drinking Soda Plan

Dr Oz had a woman on his show who drinks 12-13 cans of soda a day.  She said that she has gone 3 days without drinking soda to try and quit, but she gets massive headaches and mood swings.  Dr Oz showed her that on average, soda drinkers drink 53 gallons of soda a year which is 41 pounds of sugar.  Soda, quite honestly, is toxic to our bodies!

What Makes Soda Addictive?

1.  Caffeine – the caffeine found in soda makes you feel cravings for more of it.

2.  High Fructose Corn Syrup or Sugar – these sweeteners make you want to have more and more soda, which results in making you gain weight

I was completely shocked when Dr Oz showed that Dr Mike Roizen is also addicted to diet soda… in fact, Dr. Roizen “The Enforcer” drank 7 diet sodas in the video at the Cleveland Clinic that Dr Oz showed.

Dr Oz’s 28 Day Challenge: Soda

Week 1 – Go Sugar Free

Dr Oz said that during the first week, you should exchange your usual sugary soda for diet soda.  This will help you to break one addiction.  You should also try to eat lots of fish, eggs and beans this week.

Week 2 – Go Caffeine Free

Dr Oz said that week 2 you should drink only caffeine free diet soda.  When you get headaches, take ibuprofen.  Also, eat vitamin b rich foods like spinach, chick peas and vitamin-enriched cereals.

Week 3 – Cut Consumption by 50%

Dr Oz said that week 3 you should cut down on the amount of soda you drink so that you are only drinking half of what you used to drink.  The remaining 50% of the time, drink a glass of 80% seltzer water and 20% cranberry juice (or whatever juice you like).

Week 4 – No More Soda

Dr Oz said that week 4 you should cut out all the soda altogether.  If you want, you can chew gum instead.  And with the money you save this week, around $10, you can buy yourself a little present (just not soda!).

Comments to Dr Oz: 28 Day National Challenge: Soda & Soft Drinks

  1. You GO, Dr. Oz!! Soda addiction affected my health in ways I had no understanding of until I broke the habit. Once I eliminated this beverage from my daily routine I found out how detrimental it had been -to my mental health, especially. Good luck to everyone who accepts this challenge! You may be surprised at how better you feel!

  2. I am really disappointed with how Dr. Oz has structured his 28-Day Soda Challenge. I really think he missed an opportunity to inform and transform people’s lives. We are not babies. We are powerful, strong adults. Even if we don’t always feel that way.

  3. Thank you so much for this Doctor Oz. I was just telling my friend the other day how hard it is for my to stop drinking the ridiculous amount of soda i have been drinking since the age of 13. This gives me an idea of the structure with which I have to approach this. Thank you :)

I have gone back and forth like an addict with Diet soda for my entre adult life. Aspartame should be classified as it is in reality – an addictive drug. I am up to 64 oz a day again but remember when I was not on Diet soda and how good I felt. Thanks for giving me the courage to do it again. I am going to start at week 2 – getting rid of the caffeine. Then, reduce my intake by 12 oz a day each week for 5 weeks. It may take longer but the headaches really killed me the last time I quit.

    Dr Oz- thank you!
Yoooouuuu soooo smmmaarrtt! I’ve drank Coke/Pepsi for 45 years. It has done a number on my waist-line, butt, and internal organs. The dentist also loves me, with all the sugar through the years, thank goodness he doesn’t preach, I’ve had extensive dental work. I did quit about 20 years ago, strictly Diet pop, had a slice of pizza and that was it. Diet pop and pizza? Now diet pop and pizza are a wonderful thing ! I won’t start again!
the headaches? the with-drawl? and the whining? I am not quite ready to give up the diet soda this week, I will buy caffeine/diet to work into the day. But, I’m moving forward, this will not control my life any longer.
Thank you Dr Oz I LOVE YOU!

  6. Sharing this on my website. I’ve been soda free for almost a year and feel so much better!

DR. OZ. I AM YOUR FAN FROM MEXICO CITY, I ALWAYS SEE YOUR PROGRAM.
I HAVE HIPOTIROIDISMO,COLITIS AND A TROMBO IN MY LEG..UPS! I CAN´T LOSE WEIGHT.. I HAVE A LOT OF STRESS!!! I WAS DRINKING DIET DRINKS SOME DAYS OF THE WEEK,SINCE THIS WEEK I DONT DRINK MORE.. I ONLY USE SPLENDA FOR MY TE..
CONGRATULATIOS FOR BEEN SO GOOD WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE.
AND THANK YOU FOR READING MI NOTE.

  9. I used to be a mountain dew junkie! It was my version of coffee, had to have one every morning. I switched to diet pepsi and I had some serious withdrawal headaches. Of course they passed, but I am now in the process of quitting soda all together and I’m having bad headaches again… but those too will pass. I hate the thought that I have a vice, something that has a hold on me… It’s not easy to quit, but neither is being fat and toothless.

  10. Spicy Thomas says:

Wrong Dr. OZ!! Diet Sodas are not a fix!! Artificial Sweeteners are poison. You need to stop drinking them, suffer a few days from the headaches, detox your body and liver and start putting the right stuff in your body. By the way, you suggested chewing gum…..are you nuts? Check the labels. Aspertame is listed on almost every package. I have found two kinds that don’t list that poison, Fruit Stripe and Chicklets. Hmmm???Think about it? When were these gums marketed? the 1950′s!! Get nutrition people!! Wake up and stop letting the government control you. Want more information on “good stuff”? email me!! P.S. AMERICA…..stop depending on everything you hear on TV and think for yourself and do your own research!! REALLY!!

  11. 30 days no soda = 12 pounds lost !!! that’s all I gave up

  12. I was drinking about 3 to 4 diet sodas a day- The 32oz size. People working at the grocery store would ask what I did with all the diet Pepsi. I lied and told them I bring it to work for everyone. I drank it all.
This was going on for years (15+ years) I put on allot of weight. But was not eating allot.
One day I decided to stop. I found I needed the caffeine. I was getting headaches. I could never drink coffee. I loved the smell of coffee but couldn’t drink it. I tried it with Stevia.
Now I drink water with 1 or 2 cups if BLACK coffee with Stevia.
I haven’t drank soda in over a year.
