Dr Oz did a show with Deepak Chopra, an Alternative Health All-Star, who taught us Secrets to Reverse Aging and How to Meditate to Lose Weight. Doctor Oz said that Deepak Chopra’s approach combines the body, mind, and spirit and that he is considered one of the rock stars of alternative treatment. In March of 2010, Chopra was on the Dr Oz Show and here is a recap from that appearance (just in case you missed it!): Alternative Health
Who is Deepak Chopra?
Deepak Chopra has been building bridges between the ancient practices of his country – India – and US medical treatments for years. In America, we look at our body as a physical machine, but Chopra says that our brain, body and environment are all integrated. Your thoughts can affect your health. In fact, there is an enormous potential to re-wire our brain to help ourselves recover because our emotions and our biology are strongly connected. Deepak Chopra has started a multi-media movement and has written 60 books, including his latest book called The Soul of Leadership.
Dr Oz & Deepak Chopra: How to Reverse Aging
Deepak Chopra told Dr Oz that our genes are very fluid. We have 500 genes that influence things like inflammation, heart disease and cancer. You have the power to turn off the bad genes and to turn on the good ones.
Dr Oz asked Chopra if he had to give people just one piece of advice to make their lives better, what would it be? Deepak said you should close your eyes and watch your breath for 5 minutes – paying special attention to your heart. Ask yourself the following questions: Who am I? What do I want? What is my purpose? You do not need to have the answers, but life will move you towards the answers just by asking them.
Dr Oz’s next question for Deepak Chopra was what is the biggest mistake that people make? Deepak said that people think there is a magic pill to fix all of their problems, but this is wrong. Healing comes from within. How we interact with our environment, how we think, how we behave, how we interact with other people, exercise, good sleep, and stress management – these are all of the things that can turn on good genes and turn off bad genes. The most significant things we can impact include inflammation, heart disease, and cancer. Chopra’s techniques can deeply redefine how we live our lives.
Dr Oz & Deepak Chopra: Relaxing Breathing to Manage Stress
The first secret is to manage stress, because stress is harmful to our bodies. Dr Oz asked why stress is so harmful to us? Depak Chopra said that stress affects everything and can lead to things like addictive behavior, cancer, and heart disease. It all has to do with your telomeres, which are the caps on the end of each chromosome. You release hormones from your adrenal gland which influence your neurons. Inside of your neurons, you have DNA, which reproduce all the time. Every time your cells reproduce, you lose a little bit from the end of your DNA (the telomeres) and, eventually, when you lose a lot from the ends, your DNA begins to fray and your nerves shrivel up. If you lose the ability to fix the snipped ends of your telomeres (and stress makes the ends get cut off faster), before you know it, your DNA can unravel and become much less useful to you.
Deepak Chopra said that one thing you can do to help manage stress is a special breathing exercise 5-10 minutes every day. Place your thumb on your right nostril and breath in through your left nostril. Then remove your thumb and cover your left nostril with your middle finger and ring finger while you breath out through your right nostril. Repeat, alternating between nostrils, and close your eyes to help you relax.
Dr Oz & Deepak Chopra: 6 Tastes of Life
The second secret to reverse aging is through your diet. Favor fresh food, because life energy comes from the sun. Try to avoid things like frozen dinner meals, muffins, and cans of soup, because these are all dead foods. Deepak Chopra said that you want the following 6 Tastes of Life and the 7 Colors of the Rainbow in your diet, because we metabolize information about the universe into our bodies through the food that we eat. Sweet, sour, and salty foods lower your metabolism – and these are the foods that unfortunately dominate our diets in modern American society.
6 Tastes of Life: Sweet Foods
You need a little bit of something sweet, but you do not want too much because this hurts your metabolism. Deepak did not mention any foods he likes from this category, but I think I saw milk under the sweet category.
6 Tastes of Life: Sour Foods
Deepak Chopra said that sour foods include things like yogurt, citrus fruits, blueberries, blackberries, cherries etc. Berries contain phyto-chemicals which are anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatories.
6 Tastes of Life: Salty Foods
Deepak said you want a little bit of salty foods, because otherwise you crave it, but you should limit this category since it slows down your metabolism. Salty foods include things like seaweed and bbq sauce.
6 Tastes of Life: Pungent Foods
Now we get to the interesting categories. Pungent foods include things like cinnamon, ginger, radishes, mustard, and horseradish. Deepak said that pungent foods are anti-inflammatory and speed up our metabolism. This is why you sometimes see people sweating when they eat ethnic foods – their metabolisms are working hard.
6 Tastes of Life: Bitter Foods
Deepak Chopra said that bitter foods are usually yellow and green vegetables like yellow peppers, broccoli, and spinach. Bitter foods also help to speed up your metabolism.
6 Tastes of Life: Astringent Foods
The final category are Astringent Foods, which pucker your mouth. Deepak said that some examples of Astringent Foods include mushrooms, lentils, figs, green tea or, to a lesser extent, black tea.
Ideally, to lose weight, you want to maximize the amount of pungent, bitter and astringent foods that you eat!
Dr Oz & Deepak Chopra: Sleep Advice
Deepak Chopra told Dr Oz that restful sleep is crucial. Drug Sleep (like sleeping from sleeping pills) or Alcohol Sleep do not give you true rest. You need 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night, but the amount of time is not the only crucial thing. To get restful sleep, you also need to sleep during the optimal times of 10 pm and 6 am, because this is when our sleep-wake cycles lock in with Circadian Rhythms. The ideal bed time is 10 -10:30 pm. Here are some tips that Chopra shared with Dr Oz to get the best night’s sleep:
1. Eat a light meal for dinner between 7 and 7:30 – or ideally before sunset. Walk for 30 minutes afterward.
2. Go to sleep by 10 or 10:30 pm.
3. Download your thoughts by keeping a journal.
Dr Oz & Deepak Chopra: Nutritional Complements
Dr Oz usually calls this category Nutritional Supplements, but Deepak Chopra calls it Nutritional Compliments because it is supposed to complement a good diet. Here are the list of Nutritional Complements that you should take daily:
- 1 aspirin, if you are over 40 years old
- 2 generic multi-vitamins
- 2000 mg fish oil with omega 3 fatty acids
- 2000 IU Vitamin D3 – along with calcium and magnesium
