Dr Oz was joined by Dr Andrew Weil, Dr Jim Nicolai, Dr Russell Greenfield and Dr Victoria Maizes to do a segment called The Medical Renegades: Fighting For Unconventional Answers. Doctor Oz asked each guest for an Integrative Medicine secret, like the Anti-Inflammatory Diet, the Mind-Body Connection and supplements and herbs including Flax Seed, Black Cohosh Tea, Astragalus, Ashwagandha and Juvenon or Acetyl L-Carnitine and Alpha-Lipoic Acid.
Dr Oz: Anti-Inflammatory Diet
Dr Russ Greenfield told Dr Oz that the Anti-Inflammatory Diet is not something that you can go on and off of, but rather it is a diet plan to keep you healthy for the long haul. You want to stay away from processed foods and instead pick foods like fatty fish, olive oil and even low-fat dairy products. Dr Greenfield said that you can include pasta in your diet, as long as you cook it al dente (which is how it tastes the best anyway!). Yogurt, such as Kefir and Greek Yogurt, are great for you because they have probiotics in them, but be sure the label of the product says that it includes live cultures. Dr Greenfield also suggested incorporating Tempeh and Miso Paste into your diet. Dr Oz asked how we can learn to cook with these ingredients, and he said that Dr Weil’s website has a bunch of great recipes. Plus, there is a great smoked tempeh product called Fakin’ Bacon that you can get at your grocery.
Dr Oz: Mind-Body Connection
Dr Andrew Weil said that your mind effects your body, and vice-versa. These Mind-Body Connection techniques are both cost effective and fun to do, plus they are a great way to tap into your inner self. Dr. Jim Nicolai gave techniques for how to breathe, because you can either breathe with stress turned on, or you can breathe with stress turned off. Just try the following steps several times and you will feel better.
Dr Oz: How To Breathe
Dr Jim Nicolai said that you want to breathe fuller and deeper, so he generally suggests breathing in for a count of four and out for a count of four. Slowly breathe in through your nose and then out through your mouth. While you do this, any area where you have tension in your body you should tense the muscles, and as you breathe out you should relax those muscles. This breathing technique will remedy most stress related issues.
Dr Oz: Flax Seed for Hot Flashes
Dr Victoria Maizes said that she always recommends Flax Seed for women going through menopause and suffering from Hot Flashes. Flaxseed is a great plant source of omega 3′s, fiber and an ingredient that helps to reduce Hot Flashes. You can put Flax Seed in pancakes or on yogurt, but Dr Weil made sure to point out that you must grind up Flax Seed, otherwise your body cannot digest it. Dr Maizes also mentioned Vitamin E and soy products for women with hot flashes.
Dr Oz: Black Cohosh Tea
Dr Victoria Maizes also recommended Black Cohosh (20 mg twice a day) or Black Cohosh Tea. Originally, Black Cohosh came from Native American practices. Dr Oz: Astragalus Prevents Colds
Dr Maizes said that 400 mg of Astragalus every day can help to protect you against colds and respiratory infections. Astragalus comes from traditional Chinese Medicine and is great for people who go on and off of airplanes a lot, or teachers who are around kids all day long. Dr Andrew Weil also mentioned that Astragalus is great at protecting bone marrow for cancer patients who are on Chemotherapy.
Dr Oz: Ashwagandha Helps You Sleep
Dr Maizes suggested taking 1000 mg of Ashwagandha every day if you tend to be stressed out and exhausted, but have trouble sleeping at night. Ashwagandha promotes sleep, just like Dr Oz mentioned on a previous show of his: How To Age-Proof Your Mind
Dr Oz: Juvenon or Acetyl L-Carnitine & Alpha-Lipoic Acid
Dr Andrew Weil shared with Dr Oz the one item he cannot live without: Acetyl L-Carnitine & Alpha-Lipoic Acid. If that is a mouthful, then just remember the marketed name Juvenon. Dr Weil said that Juvenon was found by Dr Bruce Ames and it helps to protect your mitochondria and retards cellular aging.
Dr Oz: Muscle Tension Causes Headaches
Dr Oz left some time at the end of the segment so that people from his audience could ask the doctors their own questions. One lady said that her 17 year old daughter has chronic headaches, and she asked if there was anything they could do other than over-the-counter medication. Dr Weil said that the most common cause for headaches is muscle tension. So check how tense your neck muscles are, and get a massage. If your headache starts at the back of your head and moves up, and if it tends to come towards the end of the day, muscle tension is a likely culprit.
Dr Oz: Fresh Fruit Allergy
Another lady from Dr Oz’s audience said that in her early 20′s she developed an allergy to fresh fruit, so she can only eat cooked fruit now. Dr Greenfield said that food allergies are very common these days. One thing that might help with a Fresh Fruit Allergy is to increase the probiotics in your diet. Also, you might find that even though fresh fruit caused an allergic reaction before, that you can now eat them and have grown out of the allergy.
