Dr Oz & Dr Christiane Northrup: Hormone Replacement Therapy

By on February 8, 2011

Dr Oz did a segment called Dr Oz’s Alternative Health All-Stars and then he brought back Dr Christiane Northrup to discuss what women have to do right now to improve their health, including a surprising thing you do not know about estrogen.  Dr Northrup told Doctor Oz that women must avoid refined sugar, because it increases insulin which wreaks havoc on hormones.  Between diet, exercise and meditation, you can decrease your insulin and stress hormones and balance your hormones naturally and automatically.

Dr Oz & Christiane Northrup: Estrogen

Dr Christiane Northrup said that estrogen is the key hormone to a woman’s health.  Estrogen is very Dr Oz & Dr Christiane Northrupvolatile though.  Dr Oz asked why is an understanding of estrogen so key to understanding bad things that happen to women?  Dr Northrup said that we have estrogen receptors everything, even on our skin.  If you get too much estrogen, it can act as Estrogen Dominance and make too many large cells too quickly which leads to a whole bunch of things including obesity.

Dr Northrup said that Progesterone is often the Forgotten Hormone.  Dr Oz did a demonstration to show how in a woman’s body the estrogen increases during your cycle and then lowers as the progesterone increases.  Then as the progesterone decreases, the estrogen increases.  And this process repeats.  If this delicate process does not work exactly correctly, you start to get unwanted hair (either hair in places you do not want or you lose hair from places that you want it), irregular weight, mood swings and exhaustion.

Dr Christiane Northrup said that PMS is not a birth control deficiency or a Prozac deficiency.  When you cry at hallmark commercials and are pre-menstrual, you and your hormones are trying to tell you something.

Dr Oz: Hormone Replacement Therapy

Dr Oz said that he always hears so much frustration over Hormone Replacement Therapy.  What should women do?  Dr Christiane Northrup said that if you have had your ovaries removed before the age of 45, then you need hormone replacement probably because you will be at risk for Parkinson’s Disease and a whole slew of other medical problems.  Dr Northrup said that women should keep their ovaries though – they are there for a reason.  She said 1 in 3 women do not have ovaries because they are removed to prevent Ovarian Cancer, but you really should do your research and get a second, third and fourth opinion before removing your ovaries.  Dr Northrup said you do no need much hormone replacement therapy and you should stick to natural forms of progesterone and estrogen.  Dr Christiane Northrup said that doctors do not understand the difference between a hormone with a 3-d structure and the synthetic man-made hormones that are created this way so that they can be patented.  Dr Northrup said that she would always opt for the natural form of the hormone.

  1. Dr Christiane Northrup said we should stick to natural forms of progesterone and estrogen. What exactly are these natural forms? Recently I had a thermogram of my breasts and they showed “leopard spots” – what exactly is this and is it a bad thing?
