Dr Oz: Fertility Treatments Risks
Dr Oz spoke about a variety of Fertility Treatments, but what are the risks involved with them? Dr. Evelyn Minaya, Ob/gyn, told Doctor Oz that there may be major health risks if a woman waits longer to have children. As we mature, our chances for such diseases as diabetes increase. Older women should be more concerned about not carrying to term and having premature babies. Because the eggs are more mature, the risk of Down Syndrome increases.
Dr Oz: Down Syndrome Risk
- 1 in 1400 for down syndrome if conceived in yours 20s
- 1 in 30 at 40-years-old
-1 in 5 at 45 and over
Dr. Lahl stated that besides the health factor in conceiving at a later age, there is also the social issue of making babies through anonymous sperm donations. She made a film focusing on these sperm babies, who now want to know their fathers.
Dr Oz: Donor Eggs & Sperm
Dr. Minaya argued that donor eggs and sperm come from people who volunteer. It’s not as if they are being forced. They get paid for their services. As an ob/gyn, Dr. Minaya found it difficult to tell a woman that you can’t have a baby, but if it is not medically sound, she will sit down with the patient and tell them it may not be in her best interest to have a child.
Dr Oz: IVF
Sharon, an audience member, used IVF. She became pregnant with twins and then at 19 weeks, she woke up in hospital with a c-section scar with no babies—she suffered a miscarriage. She went through IVF a second and third time and when they were unsuccessful, she went the international adoption route. In 3 months, she brought back 2 babies and today, she wouldn’t do it any other way.
