Dr Oz Free Clinic: America’s Health Crisis- Healing the Uninsured

By on November 23, 2011

Dr Oz & CareNow’s Free Clinic

Dr Oz, in conjunction with CareNow, held one of the largest free clinic events ever. Thousands of people desperate for medical attention came to receive the free healthcare. Dr Oz was on a mission to transform and save the lives of those people as well and yours.

According to Dr Oz, 50 million people are without health insurance and medical care. Dr Oz Free Clinic That day in LA, Doctor Oz heard stories like Monica, age 23, who constantly passed out but had nowhere to go to get herself checked out. Carol 60, another woman with no health insurance, stated that she had pain in her right breast and that she had a history of breast cancer. Carol couldn’t get it check out because she had no health insurance.

Dr Oz Free Health Clinic

Dr Oz and CareNow, the sponsor, transformed the LA Sports Arena into the nation’s free health clinic. Inside the clinic were 3000 doctors, dentists and technicians. Some of those that attended the free clinic learned of their diagnosis for the first time. During his free clinic trip, David 22, was diagnosed with diabetes. Vickie learned that she had high blood pressure and that her numbers were high enough to warrant a hospital stay.

Dr Oz: Health Insurance Crisis in America

Felicia, age 41, came to the clinic because she noticed a bump in her left breast about a year ago. She never sought medical attention for the bump because she did not have medical insurance. She spent the last year stressed about the bump, especially since her grandmother had passed at the age of 35 with breast cancer. Dr Oz performed a mammogram on Felicia and the results came three hours later. During those three hours, Felicia patiently waited, just grateful that this free clinic was offered. Dr Oz found a mass. Dr Oz suggested an ultrasound and then another type of mammogram to figure what was happening.

In the Dr Oz Studio, Felicia stated that the entire day was a humbling experience for her. She considered herself a hardworking woman, but fell on hard times and lost her insurance. “It felt as though the rug had been pulled out from under me”, she told Dr Oz. Dr Oz expressed his outrage because he felt people should not have to go to a free clinic and should be able to attend their private doctor’s office.

Dr Oz explained to Felicia that her breast were dense, they needed to go to another clinic for the diagnosis.

Dr Oz: Free Mammogram

Dr Oz showed an image of a breast with a large, asymmetrical, white mass that invaded the surrounding tissue. (Breast Cancer) Then Doctor Oz showed Felicia’s mammogram image. There was whiteness all around because of her dense breasts. While Felicia’s breast contained benign cysts, the mammogram indicated that there were NO signs of cancers. Completely ecstatic, Felicia stated that she couldn’t wait to get home to tell her family. Dr Oz noted that 90 percent of lumps were benign. It’s just too bad that people with no insurance had to wonder about lumps on their breasts.

Dr Oz: Veteran Clinic

Vern, a Vietnam veteran, had come into the free clinic for a chipped tooth. Vern stated that he lost his job and health insurance a few years ago. While he was originally there to see the dentist, Dr Oz discovered that Vern had other health issues. Years prior, Vern had a heart attack and had a defibrillator installed. Dr Oz and his team of doctors decided to check out his heart and discovered that Vern’s defibrillator had not been checked in years. The doctors found that Vern was a walking time bomb, basically living on borrowed time.

In the studio, Vern explained that he felt like he was just waiting for the moment for his heart to give out. On a monitor, Dr Oz showed how a defibrillator looked inside Vern’s heart. Inside the heart, there were dark circles, which indicated that Vern had previous heart attacks. This caused Vern’s heart to contain short-circuited areas. A defibrillator kick starts those areas.

Dr Oz: Defibrillator

Worried about Vern’s heart, Dr Oz checked out his defibrillator. He saw that there wasn’t much time left on Vern’s defibrillator. According to his charts, Vern only had several weeks left on his defibrillator. Dr Oz suggested that it be changed as soon as possible and to not wait for the battery to go out. Dr Oz likened Vern’s defibrillator to a gas tank, which was basically riding on fumes.

Dr Oz asked Vern of his plans now that he understood the dismal situation. Vern stated that he didn’t have one. He had to research to find out what to do next because he hadn’t planned on this. Dr Oz stepped in and offered his help, stating that as a veteran, Vern deserved to have his live saved as he had saved many himself. (Good for you, Dr Oz!) Dr Oz gave Vern a brand new, state-of-the-art defibrillator worth $30,000. Dr Oz told Vern that he would arrange to have it personally changed and implanted for free. The North Ridge Hospital Medical Center had agreed to donate time to do this for no cost.

Vern stated that he felt great that someone would do this for him and was very appreciative. Vern stated that it felt like a guardian angel was helping him through this.
