Dr Oz: Food Expiration— When Will It Expire?
In this segment, Dr Oz brought up Eileen, an audience member, who stated that she was good at checking the expiration dates of foods when she shopped. Eileen also monitored foods when they were in the refrigerator. Her method of spotting expired foods? If i contained mold, it probably expired.
(Yeah, I may have to agree on that one!)
Dr Oz played the game “When Will It Expire.” He showed Eileen a food and she had to use the expire meter to guess when it would expire from the date of first opening. Let’s play “When Will It Expire?”
Dr Oz: How Long Can You Keep An Open Cereal Box?
1. Open box of cereal
The expiration meter started and Eileen stopped at 29 days.
Answer: 60 days. An open box of cereal expired in 60 days and in fact, according to Dr Oz, you could eat it after that. 60 days was when the cereal lost its crunchiness. To get back some of that crunch factor, put the cereal into a 350 degree oven for a few minutes.
Dr Oz: How Long Can You Keep Open Mayo?
2. Open jar of mayo
The expiration meter runs and Eileen stopped at 43 days. The audience didn’t agree.
Answer: 60 days. Dr Oz stated he was even surprised at this answer, figuring the eggs and oil would spoil much soon. As long as you didn’t drop in other ingredients, such as tuna, then your mayo should be good for the 60 days. Another way to see if your mayo has gone bad; check the smell. If it smelled rancid, throw it out. Dr Oz suggested writing the date you opened up the jar on the lid. This takes out the guesswork.
Dr Oz: How Long Can You Keep Open Red Wine on the Counter?
3. Open bottle of red wine on the counter (I bet most of you know this one.)
The expiration meter runs and Eileen stopped at 3 days
Answer: 3 days. Eileen got it right. (Don’t act like you didn’t get it right too!)
Eileen wins her very own stainless steel trashcan. (Could I have the bottle of wine instead?)
