Dr Oz: Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Mosquito Repellant & Summer Pests

By on May 27, 2010

Doctor Oz did a show on Summer Pests including jelly fish, flies, fire ants and mosquitoes.  Do you want to know how to treat stings and bites from these summer pests?  Dr Oz gave a bunch of summer pest tips, including a fabulous, all natural, oil of Lemon Eucalyptus that repels mosquitoes.  Dr Oz was joined by Dr Michael Raupp to teach us about these Summer Pests!  Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Mosquito Repellant

Jelly Fish Sting Treatment

Jelly Fish Clues:

- Jelly Fish give you a strong sting

- Jelly Fish are most dangerous to people at the beach

- Jelly Fish can cause death within minutes

Jelly Fish Stings cause horrible itching, skin irritation, and even nausea, diarrhea and muscle spasms.  The Jelly Fish use their long tentacles to paralyze their prey, and when the tentacles lodge into your skin, they inject you with toxins.

To deactivate Jelly Fish Stings, rub your skin with salt water (not fresh water).  Then take shaving cream and cover the area, and use something like an old credit card (or something of a similar shape and size) to scrape off the shaving cream.  Next, use ice and calamine lotion on the area that the Jelly Fish stung you.  Dr Oz also mentioned warm water and meat tenderizer or vinegar as being helpful for Jelly Fish Stings.

Flies – Deer Flies & Horse Flies

Fly Clues:

- Flies are attracted to carbon dioxide

- Flies are daytime feeders

- Flies can deliver diseases and cause high fevers

Flies can transfer anthrax, lyme disease, and even anemia.  Deer Flies and Horse Flies have razor sharp daggers that they stab you with, and then they wait for your blood to come out so that they can suck it up.

If a fly bites you, disinfect the area with hydrogen peroxide or ethanol.  Then, put some hydrocortisone cream on the fly bite.

Fire Ant Treatment

Fire Ant Clues:

- Fire Ants can sting repeatedly

- Fire Ants live in a colony

- Fire Ants become aggressive when disturbed

Fire Ants are classified as being part of the bee clan.  Basically, Fire Ants are like stinging, wingless wasps according to Dr. Raupp.  Millions of acres of land in America are infested with Fire Ants, including playgrounds.  After getting a sting from a Fire Ant, you will get a scab within 24 – 48 hours and Fire Ant stings can scar.

If you get stung by Fire Ants, wash the area and be careful not to break the blisters.  Cool down the area with ice and take some antihistamine if you are having an allergic reaction.  If you get shortness of breath or feel dizzy call your doctor.

Mosquito Repellent – Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Home Remedy

Dr Oz said that 100% of us will encounter mosquitoes this summer.  Raupp was very brave and put his arm in what he called a Cage of Fear – basically a box full of mosquitoes, to show us how many mosquitoes go after his arm – his arm was literally covered in mosquitoes!  Mosquitoes have chemical receptors and can detect the unique scent of humans.  In addition to mosquito bites being very itchy, you can get horrible diseases like the West Nile Virus from mosquitoes.  Mosquitoes carry bad diseases because they will go and bite a bird that is carrying the West Nile Virus or other diseases, and then it will go and bite a human – injecting the West Nile Virus from the bird into the person.

Mosquitoes do not like compounds found in tomatoes, soybean oils and eucalyptus.  Dr Oz said he covers his kids in oil of lemon eucalyptus in the summer because it is highly repellent against mosquitoes.  Light skin, fair skin, and red heads are most prone to mosquito bites.  You can get Lemon Eucalyptus Oil at sporting good stores or grocery stores, and apparently it is competitively priced with DEET products.  I will be picking up some Lemon Eucalyptus Oil this summer!

Comments to Dr Oz: Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Mosquito Repellant & Summer Pests

  1. Nadine Lloyd says:

Would a blend of Lemon Oil and Eucalyptus Oil work? If so, what ratio would be used (number of drops of oil from each) to what quantity of water?

I’m 49 and only just became attractive to Mosquitos …… thankfully only reacting with a small lump which is not sore or itchy.

  2. Good question Nadine, I’m not sure if Lemon Eucalyptus Oil is just a mixture of Lemon Oil and Eucalyptus Oil. I suppose you could always experiment and test it out. Let me know how it works for you!
