Dr Oz: Relationship Stress- Is Relationship Stress Making You Sick?

By on June 23, 2010

Doctor Oz did a show on how to reduce stress in your relationships.  Is stress in your relationship making you ill? A positive stress-free relationship is not just about love, it can mean the difference between life and death.  Married couples are happier and healthier statistically than people who are single or divorced.  Married couples have less cancer, less depression, fewer heart attacks and recover faster from illnesses.  Couples living in a miserable marriage are 25% more likely to have serious depression than those who are in a happy marriage.  What can you do if you are in  a stressful relationship?  Dr Janet Taylor, a stress management therapist, joined Dr Oz to discuss relationship stress.   Relationship Stress

Dr Janet Taylor told Dr Oz that it a myth that happy couples do not fight.  Conflict is natural and does not have to be destructive.  In fact, conflicts give you the opportunity to learn how to work things out and to practice communication skills.  Dr Oz explained that stress makes the adrenal gland release chemicals that make your heart beat faster, and then belly fat gets bigger as a reaction to the stress.  Nature’s reason for making your stomach fat grow when you are stressed comes from the fact that a long time ago, the biggest stress of all was famine, so this was a survival mechanism.

Dr Oz said that today, the main reasons couples argue are over money, household chores, in-laws and sex.  Dr Oz brought on his show a couple who has lots of relationship stress and have muscle pain, depression, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.  They have conflicts over money, because she tends to be more conservative and frugal, while he wants to spend more money.  Dr. Taylor said that how you cope and respond to the stress is the most important.

Dr Oz mentioned a stress test where they check CRP (C Reactive Protein) levels, and the blood test can indicate how much stress you are under, including emotional stress.  A person’s CRP or C Reactive Protein number should be less than 3, but this couple had a 7.3 and a 9.8 level for CRP.  CRP is also a strong indicator for heart attacks.  Very scary.

How To Control Relationship Stress:

1.  Write It Down

Sit down together and write out what is stressing you out.  This couple said the following things add stress to their lives: mortgage, business, health, life insurance and adoption.

2.  The 5-to-1 Rule

For every one negative thing you say to a person, you wipe out 5 positive things that you say to that person.

3.  Talk About Money

4.  Make Meals At Home

Not only is it healthier to make meals at home, but it can really bring families closer together.
