Dr Oz: Rosie O’Donnell’s Depression & Wake-Up Call

Dr Oz & Rosie O’Donnell

On today’s show, Dr Oz had on funny woman, Rosie O’Donnell. Dr Oz told Rosie that he had been waiting 3 years for her to join his show but thought she would be hesitant because she knew he would discuss weight issues. Rosie told Dr Oz that “her people” didn’t even tell her that Dr Oz wanted her on the show. She would have gladly done it. In fact, in true Rosie fashion, she told Doctor Oz she would have come out naked on the stage just to do his show.

When Rosie came to the stage, (not naked) the audience gave her a standing ovation—they loved her!

She looked just as excited to see the audience, stating they looked so happy, which made her happy.

Dr Oz: Rosie O’Donnell’s Health

In her 50 years, Rosie has battled weight, depression and the loss of her mom at an early age. Today, she joined Dr Oz to help Dr Oz Fans tackle their health. Doctor Oz told her that he loved the way she talked about menopause and Rosie joked that for 3 years, she was angry about menopause. No woman ever told the truth about the weight gain, the depression and the fact that you don’t want to have sex—not even with the people you’ve fantasized about for years. One day, Suzanne Somers called her and asked if she ever had her hormones checked.

Rosie’s mom died at 39, so she never even started menopause. At the age of 41, Rosie woke up drenched in sweat. At first, she thought her daughter peed in her bed but then realized her daughter wasn’t even in the bed. She found herself going outside, naked, in the dead of winter just to get some relief. She likened menopause to feeling like a pizza oven inside and there was no way to turn it off. She told Suzanne she would go to the doctor and she did. That was when she started taking bioidentical hormone cream. Even though she takes this medication, Rosie strongly suggested you research it for yourself and consult with your physician.

Dr Oz told Rosie that yes, hot flashes aren’t pleasant, however, they are made worse by weight. Belly fat is something that comes from anxiety issues (and all that junk food!) Rosie stated that in photos before her mom died, the O’Donnell family was average weight. After her mom died, she noticed the family got heavier. At age 10 and 11, the kids were doing the shopping, and of course, bought junk. The family would basically eat junk all day in a mass feeding frenzy.

Doctor Oz asked Rosie what were some of the triggers that pushed her to eat. Rosie told Dr Oz that she wasn’t really sure. Her partner, Michelle, was fit and healthy and one evening, Michelle stated that she was hungry. Michelle asked Rosie if she was hungry and Rosie replied that she hadn’t been hungry in 22-years. She’s never really felt hunger because she was always eating whenever she wanted, instead of eating when she was hungry. (I totally get this one!) Dr Oz asked if she ever secretly ate and Rosie told him that she started doing that recently, over Christmas. According to Rosie, Halloween thru January was her fat health time, even stealing the kids’ Halloween candy. Now they had to hide it from her.

Rosie told Dr Oz that she felt shame for eating secretly. Michelle wants to marry her, but wanted to work with Rosie to get healthy first. Michelle told her that it wasn’t a question of if she got diabetes, it was a question of when. This was Rosie’s wake-up call. That’s when she started to take better care of her health, including her looks. She felt she had a lack of self- care and was trying to change that.

Dr Oz promised to keep Rosie out of The Truth Tube, but did ask her to put on the purple gloves. (Even Rosie knew what that meant, remembering Goldie Hawn got to hold a brain during her purple glove moment.)

Doctor showed Rosie a normal stomach. He then showed Rosie a stomach that contained excessive fat. (The entire audience “ewwwd” the fatty stomach. It was gross!) Rosie told Dr Oz that the fatty stomach had to be hers, especially after a woman she met in a Baskin and Robbins ice cream store asked if she was pregnant. Rosie stated that her thighs and butt were rock hard, but her stomach was full of fat. (She even had Dr Oz squeeze her ass, and he confirmed it was rock hard.)

Stomach fat can cause hypertension, diabetes and cancer. The fat makes estrogen, which causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Michelle, her partner, told Rosie to get healthy for herself first. Then do it for the kids and then Michelle. Rosie stated she knew all of this but she still has unhealthy eating habits—and this was where her shame came from.
