Doctor Oz did a show called “The Pulse” to teach us about what is hot in health now. Dr Oz was joined by Roshini Raj, author of “What the Yuck,” Donnica Moore, author of “Woman’s Health for Life,” and Jeff Gardere. Dr Oz covered topics ranging from airport full body scanner dangers to a virus that causes obesity. Lots of very interesting health-related news!
Adenovirus 36 Causes Childhood Obesity?
Millions of Americans struggle with obesity, but could it be something other than genetics, a bad diet and lack of exercise? Could you “catch” obesity? And could a virus cause obesity? Dr Oz said a study recently concluded that children who had Adenovirus 36 were more than 4 times as likely to have Childhood Obesity. Donnica Moore said that there was a significant weight difference of 35 pounds found, and also they found that when you inject animals with Adenovirus 36 that they produce more fat cells. Roshini Raj is more skeptical and said that the study did not show cause and effect, and that for most people who are trying to lose weight, the virus is not the answer. Jeff Gardere had a very valid concern, which is that this is sending the wrong message to the public because some people might begin to think they should stay away from obese or overweight people because they could “catch” the virus or obesity.
Corn Sugar: New Name for High Fructose Corn Syrup
Dr Oz said that the Corn Refinery Association wants to change the name for High Fructose Corn Syrup to Corn Sugar. One reason is surely because consumers are becoming educated and have dramatically decreased their consumption of high fructose corn syrup. Dr Oz said that other foods have been successfully renamed. Prunes are now called dried plums (though I still call them prunes!), and Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed is the old name for Canola Oil. Americans should be cutting sugar our of their diet and becoming healthy overall, so whether it is called corn sugar or regular sugar or high fructose corn syrup, we should stop eating all of them. As soon as consumers make a shift, the companies will respond by producing foods with less sugar and corn syrup. As Dr Oz said, we can rename vodka to happy juice or sugar to white dust… but it is still the same product!
Airport Full Body Scanner Dangers
Dr Oz said there are 1000′s of full body scanners in airports already and another 800 are on their way. These full body scanners can see under your clothing and are supposed to help us stay safe. The TSA says that full body scanners or Backscanners are not harmless, but some people are worried about the radiation people will be exposed to over time.
Dr Oz showed how medical x-rays penetrate though your skin, tissue and go to your bones. However, the Airport’s Full Body Scanners are lower pressure xrays that don’t go all the way through your body, they just go through your skin and maybe a little deeper. If you are a frequent traveler, you may want to pick the pat down option instead of using the Backscanners. It is all about weighing the risks and benefits. Donnica Moore said that one of the benefits of these airport scanners is to help prevent terrorism, but she wants to know first if these machines have ever caught even one terrorist.
Is Shopping As Good As Sex?
Dr Oz said there was a study done that showed that emotional reactions in your brain are the same when women are shown images of shopping ads and when women are shown sexual images. There is a hormone made in the brain called oxytocin that goes to your groin and to your reproductive organs, but oxytocin can also do other things besides for making you feel intimate. One good point is that women do not respond to porn in the same way that men respond to porn… when will researchers learn this??? It was determined that people who have sex twice a week have half as high a chance of dying, compared to people who have sex just once a month.
America’s Hotbeds for Sex
Dr Oz said a study was done that looked at the birth rates, STD incidents, sales of condoms and sales of sex toys in America. Men’s Health magazine recently published the results and announced the hotbeds of sex. So what are the most sexual cities in America? Dr Oz said that Austin, Dalls, Columbus and Durham are among the cities that have the most sex. The cities with the least sex are Portland, Burlington and Yonkers (all cities in the North!). If you are not having enough sex though, you should look at what is going on in your relationship. You do not necessarily have to move, just be observant of your relationship.

Dear Dr OZ
Thank you for doing a show on airport scanners. Please can you tell me if these x-ray machines are safe for pregnant woman or woman who may be pregnant. I see not a single study has been done. I am extremely concerned about this and feel terrible intimidated by airport security. If you have reason to believe that they may not be safe can we start a Dr Oz petition to put warnings on these scanners?
I have read on the internet that pregnant woman who have refused to be scanned were intimidated and made to miss their flights. What could the terrorists do to us that would be worse than exposing unborn children to ionising radiation ?
Thank you.
Hi Kat! We are not affiliated with Dr Oz, we are just Dr Oz’s biggest fan site. I also would love to know the answer to this question, but since I am not a doctor, I cannot speak to that point. My gut instinct would tell me though not to go through the scanner if I was pregnant. In fact, I am not pregnant, and I still think I will refuse going through the scanner and ask instead for the “pat down” method. You are 100% correct in my book, better to sacrifice missing a flight though than to harm your unborn baby. I’ll let you know if I see any studies or articles on the effect of full body scans on pregnant women.
