Dr Oz: Women’s Skin Over 50: Argireline, Azelaic Acid & Alpha Hydroxy Acid

By on December 6, 2010

Dr Oz’s 50′s Prevention Guide on today’s show included a segment called “3 Items to Look Younger,” naming 3 mystery ingredients in skin care products that help  the skin of people over the age of 50 look more youthful.  From Argireline for Crows Feets to Alpha Hydroxy Acid for Scaly Skin to Azelaic Acid for Age Spots, Doctor Oz covered all of the secret ingredients to look for when buying skin care products. Dr Oz Argireline for Crows Feet

Dr Oz: Crows Feet – Argireline & Peptides

Dr Oz said that buying products containing Peptides is key to minimizing Crows Feet in women over 50.  Crows Feet happen because the muscles behind your skin bend and unbend, over and over, causing creases that eventually become deeply etched into your skin.  Peptides make your muscles move a bit less so you have fewer lines.  Dr Oz’s Mystery Ingredient for Crows Feets is Argireline, which is found in creams, serums, and other eye products and is reported to mimic the effects of Botox.  Dr Oz advised that we look for a solution with 5-10% of Argireline.

Dr Oz: Scaly Skin – Alpha Hydroxy Acid & Exfoliants

Dr Oz said that sun damage and loss of hormones can lead to rough, scaly skin.  The clue is exfoliants and Dr Oz’s Mystery Ingredient for Scaly Skin is Alpha Hydroxy Acid.  With regular use, Alpha Hydroxy Acid can increase your collagen, so look for an Exfoliating Cream with Alpha Hydroxy Acid.

Dr Oz: Age Spots – Azelaic Acid & Melanin

Dr Oz said that the clue for Age Spots is Melanin, which is the pigment you get on your skin that create age spots, and it is similar to getting a tattoo.  Dr Oz’s Mystery Ingredient for Age Spots is Azelaic Acid, which is found in grains and actually inhibits Melanin.

  8. I too have age spots on my face, my dermatologist has me using Retin A with Obagi NuDerm that contains 4% hydroquinone daily… I’m interested in this azelaic acid, done an internet search and found this ..
In the United States Azelaic Acid cannot be purchased Over the Counter. This product is only available by prescription only. This is the same in some Asian countries. However some countries you can get it without a prescription. Places such as a Canada and Australia offer it as an over the counter treatment. Some of the more common prescription names for Azelaic Acid include Finacea, Szelex, Skinorenand AcneDerm.
Since I live in Canada this is good news. For those of you using Azelaic acid could you please tell me what product you are using.
    thanks

  9. I just googled argireline, and found one site that said it could actually cause sagging! Why trade wrinkles for sagging? Also it is just as expensive over a years use as having botox injections for the year, so where does that leave us?

  10. EILEENSENATORE says:

WHAT PRODUCTS HAVE THE ARGIELINE 5-10% .HAVE SEARCHED AND CANNOT FIND BRAND NAMES.ALSO WHAT ABOUT THE SAGGING. I HAVE ENOUGH OF THAT AND DO NOT NEED ANY MORE HA11..

  11. I have found that NO MORE than 1 x 2 daily Beta Carotene (in Retina) supplements (25000 I.U.) really refined my pores, vitamin D3 (5000mg x2) helped tighten my skin, Biotin (3000mg x2) helped my thinning hair grow back & vitamin C (1000mg x2) also is good for the skin. Yes, I take many supplements because I don’t eat a balanced diet & believe the food we buy is deficient. I also take a multi-vitamin. My skin looks really good for a 65 y.o. Plus now I take milk thistle for problems with my liver.

  12. If you want argireline products..you need to use Elizabeth Arden’s cerimide face, eye capsuls as well as the cerimide face mask which is loaded with argireline. Arden has a cerimide plump lip cream than you can use on your lips and above your lips.

  16. Dr. Oz You had a show with 3-4 facial rememedies which can be purchased from drug store. This episode aired in Jan or Feb 2012. I believe one was Aveeno dark spot remover and the other I remeber was Ecerin calming lotion. I cannot remeber the others. Please help. Thanks Phyllis

  17. Dr. Oz, I would like to know what skin products you would recommend for women in their early 60s?. I have deep lines around my mouth, partly from having braces for an overbite where four teeth were removed. What are the best products for deep lines and wrinkles besides retina, which I currently use? Also, what are the products you recommend for dark circles below the eyes and sagging skin in the chin area, preferably ones that are cost effective? Is there anything that can help cheeks from indentation due to loss of firmness? Lastly, what do you think of argireline products in general and are there any products sold in drugstores that contain it? I realize this is a lot to ask but would really appreciate any help you can give. Thank you so much, Noreen
