Dr Oz talked to T-L-C singer Tionna “T-Boz” Watkins about her battle with Sickle Cell Anemia and how it can be life-threatening.

Many of us watched as Tionne Watkins danced and sang with her group, T-L-C, but nobody ever realized that behind the scenes she was living with sickle cell anemia. Tionne told Dr. Oz she was born with the disease, but was misdiagnosed at the age of seven and told by her doctor at the time that she would not live past the age of 30 and she would never be able to have children, but Tionne’s mother told her not to worry because God had the final say in her health.

Dr Oz: What is Sickle Cell Anemia?

Dr. Oz says our cells are normally round in shape, but in the case of sickle cell anemia they become crescent-shaped and unable to hold onto oxygen the right way, which causes them to get stuck in a person’s blood vessels. This basically prevents those important cells from reaching vital organs, essentially starving them of nutrients and oxygen. You can end up in a great deal of pain, have a stroke or even die if the condition is not addressed.

Along with her ongoing battle with sickle cell anemia, Tionne Watkins says she began to have excruciating headaches, which she believed was due to stress. When the headaches got so bad she could not see, Tionne went to her doctor who ordered an MRI, which is when they found a tumor on her brain. Dr. Oz says she she is truly lucky to be alive and able to hear and still sing due to the location of the tumor and how delicate a procedure it was for a doctor to remove it. T-Boz says that she does have a bit of hearing and vision loss and she had to regain her balance, but she feels blessed to be alive and able to tour again as T-L-C with Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas!
