Doctor Oz was joined by Chef Art Smith, who used to be Oprah Winfrey’s chef in addition to being the author of many books including Back to the Table: The Reunion of Food and Family, to teach us how to make a positively delicious and healthy Whole Wheat Margherita Pizza Recipe.

Art Smith got diabetes and was not quite 50 years old yet, so he knew that he had to change his diet.  He lives by the theory that you should have a breakfast like a king, eat like a princess for lunch and eat like a pauper for dinner… I’ve never heard it phrased better!  Some examples that Art Smith and Dr. Oz gave are to have steel cut oatmeal with fresh berries and a fritatta (eggs, mushrooms, spinach, etc.) for breakfast, Whole Wheat Margherita Pizza Recipe for lunch instead of fried chicken and a salad with salmon for dinner instead of chinese takeout food which is high in sodium and fat.  Art Smith said he has been sleeping better ever since losing weight and starting this diet!  Click here to see Art Smith’s Whole Wheat Margherita Pizza Recipe, which is only 200 calories per slice of pizza!

Doctor Oz did a show on anorexia to teach us that eating disorders are not just for women.  Dr. Oz brought Bryan on his show.  Bryan has been struggling with Anorexia for 20 years and his Anorexia is killing him.  Bryan is 40 years old and weighs 76 pounds.  He knows he needs to live to eat, he says it is a “no brainer,” but something in his head stops him from being able to eat – he is slowly starving to death.  Anyone who saw this episode of Dr. Oz could not help but be highly concerned and worried for Bryan and his family.

Bryan does not want to die, but he said that his life is pretty much just an existence at this point.  Bryan used to be a runner and hiker, he has a masters in science and was pre-med… he worked in zoos and aquariums and taught both high school and undergraduate students.  Bryan is very well spoken, he said that Anorexia is the most illogical and diabolical disease – there is no logic behind Anorexia.  When Bryan sees his body in the mirror, he says he knows that it looks like something that belongs in a tombstone.  This surprised me, because I thought that most people with Anorexia would look in the mirror and see a fat person, even though they were thin.

Bryan has gone to therapists and had Anorexic treatments.  Some days Bryan cannot even get out of bed now, he cannot connect with people on a social level, he is unable to hang out with friends or have a meaningful relationship and start his own family.  Dr. Oz took Bryan to the truth tube to see what Anorexia means to his physical body:

Bryan’s Anorexic Truth Tube Results:

Weight: 76 pounds (his lowest weight has been 75 pounds)

Body Fat: Under 4% (Dr. Oz’s machine only can measure 4% body fat, but Bryan’s is underneath that level)

Triglycerides: 20 (should be in the 100 range)

Blood Sugar: 32 (Dr. Oz said this is the level where people pass out on the floor)

White Blood Cell Count: 1.4 (normally your white blood cell count is in the 6-8 range).

Dr. Oz said that basically Bryan is walking in a fog because there is not enough fat for his brain’s needs and the risk for infection is very high due to such a low white blood cell count.  Dr. Oz listened to Bryan’s heart and said it was very faint and slow.  The heart has a pacemaker cell that needs certain salts and nutrients to make an electrical signal to cause your heart to beat.  Bryan’s heart is not doing this because he does not have the salts and nutrients in his diet that the pacemaker cell needs – so his heart is more or less just quivering.

Dr. Tom Hildebrandt, from New York’s Mt. Sinai Hospital, said that men can tolerate a lower percentage body fat than woman and still be healthy.  So an Anorexic man can appear healthy for longer and still have Anorexia.

Signs & Symptoms of Male Anorexia:

1.  Any rapid weight loss, even if the male falls in a healthy weight range, should raise a concern about Anorexia.

2.  If a man has obsessions or compulsions around their weight or eating, you should question if he has Anorexia.

Dr. Oz and Dr. Hildebrandt are sure that Bryan can improve his life, but this is his last chance.  Michelle Klinedinst is going to help Bryan go through rehab in Arizona.  It will be a slow progress of getting Bryan to eat food slowly, but even Bryan is hopefully optimistic.  We will be cheering you on Bryan and praying for your full recovery from Anorexia!

Doctor Oz did a fabulous home remedies segment on how old your hair is and how to repair your damaged hair with all natural home remedies!  Both your lifestyle and genetics can make your hair older than your actual, physical age.

One woman on Dr. Oz’s show was 58, but her hair was 68 years old.  Another woman was 53 years old, but her hair was 65 years old.  Dr. Oz is 49 years old and his hair’s age is 51 (though I think his hair looks fabulous!!!)… so what are some of the things that these women are doing to make their hair age faster?

What Makes Your Hair Age Faster?

1. Stress

Stress can age your hair faster, because stress increases your testosterone level.  Higher testosterone levels makes your hair thin and testosterone causes your head to produce less hair.

2. Genetics

3. Hair Styling Products

How you style your hair (chemicals, relaxers, hair dyes, etc.) all poke holes into your hair shaft and makes it harder for your hair to hold onto the moisture that it needs.  So your hair strands get shingles that look frayed and not aligned, unlike healthy hair.

4. Your Diet

If you skip meals, eat a low protein diet, or do not have enough water in your diet, then your hair will suffer and age faster.

Dr. Oz’s Healthy Hair Home Remedies & Tips:

1. Eat Salmon & Omega 3’s

Salmon is full of Omega 3’s which makes your hair have lots of lustre.  At the very minimum, take Omega 3 Fish Oil Softgels

2. Banana Hair Mask

Dr. Oz sent his top scientists to find the best home solution for damaged hair, and you know what they found? A smooth puree of mashed bananas makes the best hair mask… just apply the mashed bananas, relax for 15 minutes, and your damaged hair will get repaired and soothed!  Other more delicious sounding hair masks that used bananas include a Chocolate Banana Hair Mask or try these other Banana Home Remedies!

Doctor Oz discussed with Julie Scardina about the death of Dawn Brancheau by Tilikum, a killer whale at Sea World.  Tilikum is a 12,000 pound killer whale, which is the largest killer whale that Sea World has (Dr. Oz pointed out that this is about the size of a school bus).  Some believe that it was the swish of Dawn’s blond ponytail that caused the killer whale to attack, but I have also read that some people believe that Tilikum had pre-meditated the plan to kill Dawn.  Dawn’s family has asked Sea World not to kill the whale, and they are respecting this request.

Julie Scardina knew Dawn well and also has trained with killer whales.  Scardina said that it is very rare when something like this happens, because trainers are almost never killed by whales.  Dr. Oz asked Scardina how you can assess the risks of these animals and if there was ever a time when she thought that she could be at danger.  Scardina said that you get to know these animals on a very intimate level and if you ever think the animal isn’t in a good mood or is having a bad day, they don’t take chances.  If something does not look or feel right, they don’t get into the water with the killer whales.  Dr. Oz said that some people say these are wild animals and should not be kept in captivity but should be out in nature.  Scardina’s argument is that by having them in parks like Sea World, guests are able to educated about these animals.  Scardina said it was not very long ago that people would hunt killer whales for food.  What do you think, should killer whales be kept in nature or should a few be kept at places like Sea World? Doctor Oz was announced by Cosmo as one of their Fun Fearless Males in 2010.  In addition to Doctor Oz were people like Gerard Butler, Kellan Lutz, Chris O’Donnell, Ne-Yo, Robert Pattinson, Nathan Fillion, Stephen Moyer, Terrell Owens, Josh Schwarts, Paul Wesley and Ed Westwick.

This is what Cosmopolitan magazine had to say about Dr. Oz: “Mehmet Oz might be the most recognizable MD in the country. Hell, Oprah trusts his advice. And not only does he appear as her regular guest, but he also has his own new hit talk show. On The Dr. Oz Show, he answers any and all medical questions viewers have. Given that he has an Ivy League education and a charming smile and is a pro when it comes to the human body, we hereby diagnose him as being too perfect.”  I think I can speak on behalf of Dr. Oz’s fans when I say that Dr. Oz really is the perfect person!

Tom Joyner, radio show host and boxer, asked Doctor Oz why his elbow gets so swollen that he sometimes can’t even straighten out his arm.

Dr. Oz said that Tom Joyner’s right hook could be causing the trouble with the repetitive damage.  The humerus, the bone on the upper arm, connects to your elbow and there is something called a bursa on your elbow to lubricate the joint.  If you bend and straighten your arm repetitively, you can hurt the bursa or get bone spurs.  If your elbow is swollen, you should try ice compresses or anti-inflammatory over the counter medicine like Ibuprofen... and of course, Tom might want to stop the boxing for a bit.

Dr. Oz’s Doctor Orders for February 26, 2010 are below. Don’t forget to pass them on to a friend or family member!:

2.  Use SPF Lip Balm daily to prevent herpes outbreaks.

3.  Try aphrodisiac foods like spinach or celery to improve circulation and your sex life!
